Please join CMS in honoring Travis Spence as May’s clinician of the month! Travis has been with CMS since 2016 and is on his 12th contract (yes you read that right – 12th) assignment with the agency. He has been an ER rock star working at University of MD Baltimore Washington Medical Center for a number of assignments before transitioning to St Joseph Medical Center. Travis recently returned to where it all started at Baltimore Washington and just extended once again. In fact, they love having him as part of their team so much that they are working around his upcoming trip to Australia. Enjoy your time off, Travis – you deserve it!

Travis was nominated by his recruiter, Kate, who really enjoys his flexibility, reliability, friendliness, and wonderful positive attitude! He also gets fantastic feedback from his clinical supervisors – check it out below:

What amazing feedback! We asked Travis to share with the CMS family what has made him so successful in his nursing and agency career – check out his story below:

• Where did you grow up? How did that impact where you are in your career today?
I grew up in Carroll County MD. I don’t think this made any significant impact if I’m being honest.

• How did you get into healthcare, specifically ER nursing?
I originally wanted to do physical therapy. Then I slipped a few discs weight lifting and realized how boring physical therapy was. My girlfriend at the time recommended nursing and here I am! I tried shadowing many floors and honestly was considering changing professions until I tried ER. Always interesting and had the most autonomy from a nursing perspective.

• Where did you work before CMS, and how did you learn about CMS?
I started working at Howard County General in the ER. I learned about it because we had a lot of agency nurses there that were making more money while skipping countless boring meetings. I wanted in on that!

• What is your favorite part about your current agency assignment through CMS? Past assignments through CMS?
I’m currently at BWMC and my favorite part is the people. Certainly a dysfunctional group but I consider myself a part of it. Also the fact that they don’t let agency nurses triage so I get to avoid that dark hole.

• What is your favorite part about working for an agency?
My favorite part of working agency is the flexibility and competitive pay of course. I like having the freedom to work where I want and somewhat when I work.

• Would you recommend agency nursing to other clinicians? Why?
I would and I frequently do recommend agency nursing. More freedom for more pay, what’s not to like?

• Any favorite agency or work related stories to share?
I’ll be honest none of my favorite stories are appropriate for public consumption. You’d have to ask me in person!

• What has made you so successful in your career? Any advice to share with your fellow staff?
Despite my sarcastic attitude I’m an extremely hard worker who is constantly trying to learn new things. If I start to get too comfortable I know I need a new assignment to stay sharp. Don’t get complacent!

• What are your hobbies outside of your career?
Biggest hobby would be improving my fitness. Mostly just a gym rat but I love picking up weights and putting them back down. That and being lazy with my German Shepherd Thor!

• Let us know one (or more) random / interesting fact about you very few people know!
I have a sushi addiction which is the real reason I had to resort to agency. Good sushi isn’t cheap.

• What was your reaction to being named ‘Agency Clinician of the Month’?
It’s about time!

Its about time is right, Travis! We appreciate your humor and sarcasm, as well as your thoughtful responses and hard work. CMS is very fortunate to has you as part of our team. We know your patients and co-workers enjoy working with you, and hope you are with us for many years to come!
