This one is LONG overdue! Kim has been with CMS since 2006 (yes you read that correctly, 2006). What an amazing 10 years it has been to have Kim as part of the CMS team. Kim has done assignments in the ER, Tele, MS, Schools, and summer camps – she really has done it all. Read on to learn more about Kim and her story with CMS:
Where did you grow up? I was born in Biloxi, Mississippi and pretty much grew up everywhere as my father was active duty Air Force. I’ve lived in Biloxi, MS; San Bernidino, CA; Wiesbaden, Germany; Jacksonville, AR; and finally moved to Maryland when my father retired.
How did you get into healthcare, specifically school nursing and PRN ER nursing? I started as an EMT at the age of 17. Worked as an Emergency Tech. for 3 yrs. I obtained my AS in Nursing from Harford Community College. I started worked as a staff RN on a Telemetry floor for 3yrs. Then I came to CMS full time with my first contract in an Emergency Room. I also picked up shifts in other fields of nursing. One them being with a Special Needs Student going with him to and from school.
Where did you work before CMS, and how did you learn about CMS? Before joining CMS I was a staff RN on the telemetry floor at UCMC. I learned about CMS from Terri Weller!!!! I worked with her at GBMC ER when I was a ER Tech and going through nursing school. Terri told me about the nursing agency she was starting and told me to look her up after I got a couple of years of nursing experience. So I did!!!
What is your favorite part about your current agency assignment through CMS? Past assignments through CMS? During the school year and Camp -I-Can, I love working with the staff at the school, the support I get from CMS, and I love working with my client J.C. I love learning new areas of nursing and meeting new people!!
What is your favorite part about working for an agency? Any favorite stories about the student you work with? Or time in the ER? I love working for CMS because of the flexibility that allows me time for my 3 children. I have to laugh at the times when I go back to work after missing day with J.C. and am told about how he gave the substitute RN a “hard time”!! J.C. just looks at me and smiles!!! He so much fun to work with!!!
Would you recommend agency nursing to other clinicians? Why? I would recommend other clinicians to try agency nursing because of the flexibility, ability to learn new things!
What has made you so successful in your career? The support from my husband, children, my parents, sister, and brother have been important from day 1!!!!!!!!
What are your hobbies? I love to go camping-we have 33ft travel trailer, swimming, reading, and trying out new recipes!!!
Let us know one random interesting fact about you very few people know: I am my daughter’s Girl Scout Leader and Co-Popcorn Kernel with my husband for our son’s Cub Scout Pack.
What was your reaction to being named ‘Agency Clinician of the Month’? I totally taken by surprise!!!!
Congrats again, Kim! We are so lucky to have you as part of our team, and I know JC is very glad to have you as his RN.
